The Winner Motorsports Group team traveled back to California from Missouri as Round 7 of the Lucas Oil Regional Off Road Series So-Cal arrived at Glen Helen Raceway. With just a couple days to finish prepping the trucks, drivers Cory Winner and Cory McClenathan were already eager to strap back in their seats!
The track for qualifying on Saturday morning looked prime. The track crew laid new dirt and groomed the track Friday night. Coming off a race in Wheatland, Missouri the weekend before, the team started making changes to the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Prolite on Friday in preparation for Saturday night’s race. With 6 laps around the track for qualifying, Cory Winner ran the 2nd fastest time, only a tenth of a second behind Lucas Oil Off Road National Series top runner Brandon Arthur. Cory Mac would start 9th in the #66 Fabtech/Revchem Prolite.
With a packed house at Glen Helen Raceway, it was looking like a great night for racing. With an inversion of 4, Cory Winner would start on the 2nd row behind the #59 of Jimmy Weitzel and the #5 of Mason Cullen. The race started and after the first turn it was Winner in 4th and Mac in 9th. Winner was able to get around Cullen on the 2nd lap, putting him in the 3rd spot. He caught up to the leaders and the top 3 started to check out from the rest of the field. Brandon Arthur in the #6 truck had passed Weitzel for the lead. Winner was gaining on Weitzel and tried different lines to get around. The mandatory caution flag waved allowing the field of trucks to bunch back up. With 6 laps left, Winner focused on getting his Fabtech/General Tire Prolite into the 2nd position and challenging Arthur for the win. The #66 Fabtech/Revchem Prolite of Cory Mac was fighting with the #90 of Daniel Ferdon for 6th. Winner went back and forth with Weitzel for 3 laps. He was having to find ways to make a pass stick and time was running out. As the white flag waved, Winner made an inside dive in turn 2 and then turn 3 to setup a drag race down the back straight away. One more inside attempt on the final turn wasn’t enough though, as Cory Winner would drive to a 3rd place finish and Cory Mac would finish in the 7th spot. “I had a lot of fun! It was some great racing here at the Regionals. The General Tire Grabber X3 and Ultra Wheel combination were hooked up once again and the crew gave me another great truck to race tonight. Definitely felt like we had a winning truck but I just couldn’t get around. I am happy to come back to Glen Helen though and land on the podium! I can’t wait for Rounds 11&12 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series in September!”, said Winner after the race.
