The 2018 Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League season continued at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, MN on July 13-14 for rounds 3 & 4! Cory Winner, Cory Mac, and the team made the trek to Minnesota to see where they stacked up on a track like no other and to try and gain valuable points for a Championship run!
The Midwest weather has been intense at every race so far this season. With practice rained out on Thursday, the only track time the team would get would be 3 laps of practice on Friday and Saturday morning before each race. Winner in the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Pro Light was hoping to get on the podium for a second time this season as Mac in the #66 Raceglass/Fabtech truck would make his debut in the Midwest and use it to learn his away around a new truck and a new track. Cory Winner ran 2nd fastest in practice before the race and would start outside row 2. The green flag waved and field took off! Mac would get pushed wide in turn 1 which pushed Winner into the cushion, dropping him back a few positions. After the bad start, Winner looked to try and run some smooth and consistent laps and was hoping to make up some spots at the mandatory caution. Lap 7 began after the restart with Winner in 5th, battling with the #21 of Cam Reimers for the 4th spot. He would unfortunately get tangled with Reimers and drop back even more as the lap count dropped. The gap was too large to make up in the short time left on the 1.25 mile long track. Winner would go on to finish round 3 in 4th, while Cory Mac finished 5th.
Changes were made to the truck setup for Saturday’s race. Winner would be 3rd fastest in practice that morning and would line up on the outside in row 2 once again. The track was really coming in on Saturday after the rain early in the weekend. With some minor changes to tire groove and suspension, the WMG team thought they had great chance of running up front for Round 4. The #66 of Mac led the field to green and the trucks took off for the last time that weekend. The trucks went roaring into the big, sweeping turn 1. The #42 of Kyle Kleiman and the #21 of Reimers would get together coming off the first jump. That would let Winner by one of the trucks and put him in 4th going into turn 2. The top 4 trucks were bumper to bumper going into the unique, sandy split-lane feature of the track. Winner would choose the inside while Mac used the outside line. The #67 of Winner would beat Cory Mac and the #42 of Kyle Kleiman to turn 3 with his sights set on Reimers in 3rd. The next lap, Cory Winner went outside to inside and slid in front of the #21 to take over 3rd place, now chasing down the #29 truck of Chad Rayford. Cory then went on to pass Rayford on the inside of turn 2 the next lap. Winner was sitting in 2nd while Cory Mac was in the 5th spot when a yellow flag came out. Off the restart, Cory Winner was trying to chase down the #48 of Cody Kleiman and challenge him for the lead. After 2 more laps, Mac would unfortunately catch a rut and roll, causing another yellow. Cory Winner beat Kleiman to the flag stand though and would be scored as the leader. At the final restart of the race, Winner stepped on the throttle in the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Pro Light and never looked back, running very consistent laps all the way to the finish while setting fast lap along the way. Cory Mac would cross the line in 4th place. It was Winner’s and the team’s first professional win! After the race, Winner stated, “We were the ones to beat today. The crew gave me a fast truck and these General Tires and Ultra Wheels were hooked up! I’m happy the changes that were made paid off for us. Hopefully we can have the same outcome at the next couple races in Bark River!” Winner now is in the points lead with 4 more rounds of racing to go this year!
