After a good season racing in the Lucas Oil Midwest Short Course League, the WMG team headed back home and shifted their focus onto Rounds 9 & 10 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Glen Helen Raceway!
Being back at their home track, the team was hoping for a successful weekend after a busy summer. Qualifying took place in the afternoon before the races that evening. Putting in a solid effort, Cory Winner qualified in 6th place for Friday night’s race. With a 6 spot inversion, Winner and the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Prolite would start on the pole! With minor adjustments made to the truck, the team was looking forward to fighting for a spot on the podium. It was a stacked field of trucks though and it was going to be battle all night! The green flag dropped and it was Winner and the #33 of Mickey Thomas side by side going through turns 1 and 2. Thomas got by Winner going into turn 3 and the #12 of Brock Heger would also get by on lap 3 before the first caution on lap 4. Cory was in the 3rd spot at this point, still putting up a fight for to stay in that position. Off the restart though, he got pushed going into the first turn and over jumped the truck, causing him to land out in the cushion and move him into 4th place. On the very next lap, a fuel pump switch on the truck malfunctioned and caused the fuel pressure to drop. The issue caused more trucks to get around Cory. After switching it back on, he found himself in 7th place. At this point in the race, the field was very spread out. Cory would run in that same position all the way until the checkered flag. After a 7th place finish Friday night, Cory and the WMG crew knew they had some work to do and wanted to have a better showing for Saturday night’s event.
The track for qualifying was prime on Saturday but a handful of caution flags shortened the time available to complete laps. With only one clean lap, Cory would have to start Saturday’s race in the 8th spot. With some more improvements made to the truck after qualifying, everyone was now looking to improve finishing position after the 7th place effort on Friday night. The race began and Cory got a good start. Going into the first turn though, he would once again get pushed wide and let the trucks behind him make up ground. With about 7 trucks going into turns 2 and 3, it was looking like it was going to be another close night of racing! Winner was battling around the 6th and 7th position all the way until the first caution came out. The trucks got packed back up into a single file and the green flag waved once again. It was side by side racing all the way to turn 3 once again, except this time multiple trucks got caught up in a wreck in the middle of the turn. Winner was able to get by and then moved into 5th. In turn 4, more trucks got into each other and Cory would be able to get around one of them, putting him into 4th. The #12 of Brock Heger would eventually get back around Winner around lap 8 and move him back into 5th place. With what felt like a solid top 5 truck that evening, Cory was holding off the advancements of the #94 truck of Chris Polvoorde. Around lap 11 though, Cory caught a rut in turn 5 and put the truck up on 2 wheels. Saving the truck from rolling over, that little mistake would let Polvoorde squeeze by. For the next 3 laps, Cory battled to gain the spot back while having to defend his 6th place position from the #38 of Hailie Deegan. Time eventually ran out though and the checkered flag waved for the final time that weekend. Cory ended up finishing in 6th place, putting up consistent lap times during duration of the race. It was an overall decent weekend for the WMG team as they will now get ready for the final events of the 2018 LOORRS season!
