With the 2018 off-season coming to an end, it means that it is time to get back to racing. Rounds 1 & 2 of the Lucas Oil Regional Series hit Glen Helen Raceway for a double header weekend. The WMG team was ready to get some valuable seat time before the first round of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series on March 17th!
Qualifying took place early Saturday morning. Cory Winner, driver of the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Prolite, along with Cory Mac, driver of the #66 Fabtech/Race Glass Inc. Prolite, were eager to get back in the driver’s seat. With a great turnout at the Regional series, it was looking to be another action packed weekend of racing. After the 5 laps of qualifying, Cory Winner would end up the 2nd quickest while Cory Mac would start in the 9th spot. The track was freshly groomed but muddy for Round 1 that evening. Off the start it would be Cullen, Anderson, Weitzel, and Winner fighting for position. Cory would get pushed wide in turn 3 by another driver, letting the top 3 gain even more time on him. Gaining precious seconds as each lap passed, Winner eventually found himself on the bumper of 3rd place as the half way caution flag waved. On the restart, Winner was determined to push hard to get into a podium spot, while the #66 of Cory Mac was in a battle with Trevor Leighton and Jonathan Brenthal for a top 5 spot. The #59 of Weitzel would end up spinning in turn 4, which would give the 3rd place position to the #67 of Winner. Anderson and Cullen battled for position, but a little mistake by Cullen would let Winner slip by into 2nd. Despite a great last lap effort, the final results for Saturday would be the #52 of Ronnie Anderson in 1st, #67 of Cory Winner in 2nd, and #59 of Jimmy Weitzel in 3rd, while Cory Mac would finish in 7th.
It was a new day and the team had made multiple changes to both of the trucks after Saturday’s race to see if there could be any more speed to gain on this tight Glen Helen course. Qualifying on Saturday went well, as Cory Winner would set the fastest time and Cory Mac would grab the 9th spot once again. With the grid set for Round 2, it was time to get back to racing. Winner would start in the 4th position after the inversion. When the green flag dropped on the super slick track, it was a 3 way race into the first turn. With all the trucks practically hooked on each others bumpers, it was anyone’s game. Weitzel would spin in turn 3 which put Winner in 2nd place at the end of the first lap. Cory kept the pressure on the #5 of Mason Cullen all the way to the mandatory caution, never falling back more than truck length. Cory Mac was sitting in the 6th spot after 6 laps. On the restart, the top 2 trucks of Cullen and Winner started to pull away. Winner kept within striking distance though, as the pressure would eventually push the leader into over rotating in turn 3, letting the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Prolite slip by. With a 12 second gap on 2nd place as the final lap began, it was Winner who would cross the finish line first, setting the fastest lap of the race in the progress. The #3 of Trevor Leighton would finish in 2nd and #59 of Jimmy Weitzel finished in 3rd place. Cory Mac in the #66 Fabtech/Race Glass Inc. Prolite would finish in a respectable 7th place!
