Just 2 rounds remained for the 2017 Lucas Oil Regional Series in Southern California. Cory Winner, driver of the #67 Fabtech/General Tire Prolite, had gathered 2 wins and 5 podiums in the series thus far and was hoping to get back on the box. With Winner sitting 1st in overall points coming into Round 8 and the Round 1 make-up race, it was sure to be an action packed weekend of racing!
Glen Helen Raceway was prepped and groomed, waiting for the racing to begin. Qualifying for Round 8 took place Saturday morning. With open air in front, Cory hoped to set the fastest time of the day and start up front for the race later in the afternoon. After 5 laps, 3rd place is where Cory would sit after qualifying. Luckily the inversion for Round 8 would put Cory on the front row. Having a prime starting position, he focused on using it to his advantage. Off the start, Cory drove past Jimmy Weitzel around the outside of the first turn and never looked back. Multiple cautions though would keep it exciting, bunching the field back up for the restarts. Cory would maintain the lead though, gapping himself 10 car lengths between the 2nd place truck for the rest of the race. Winner would go on to win Saturday’s race and set the fastest lap! Weitzel and DeBerti would round out the podium. Teammate Cory McClenathan in the #66 Fabtech/Revchem Prolite would finish 7th respectively. Having extended the points lead with a successful day of racing, the team was excited and were hoping to gather the same results on Sunday!
Sunday’s race was the makeup for Round 1, which was rained out. Being the last race of the year for this series, the team wanted to go out on top. After a flawless race the day before, Cory Winner wanted nothing more but another win to finish the season off. Qualifying began and within the final laps of the session, Cory would set the fastest time. With the inversion for the race being 6 positions, it would mean Winner would start deeper in the field and Cory Mac would start on the pole. The green flag dropped and the chaos would start in turn 1. Getting through it though, Winner drove around his teammate in turn 2 and sat in 3rd. He would pass the #5 of Mason Cullen on the first lap and began chasing down the #36 of Kyle Knott. Winner passed Knott in turn 4 on lap 2 and drove away from the field once again. The trucks would get packed back together on lap 6 for the halfway mandatory caution. Off the restart, Cory focused on hitting his marks just like the previous day. Cullen and Weitzel would battle it out for 2nd and 3rd behind Winner though, only furthering his gap on the rest of the field. When the checkered flag waved, it would be Winner in 1st, Cullen in 2nd, and Weitzel in 3rd! When the dust cleared, it was Cory Winner who had won the 2017 Prolite Championship! Cory Mac would also finish in 5th place overall for the year! After an amazing weekend of racing, the focus has now shifted to the final rounds of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series!
