The final weekend of the 2017 Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series season took place at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, AZ and it contained some amazing racing! Cory Winner, along with the Winner Motorsports Group team, was hoping to cap the year off with a couple good finishes in Round 13 and the Challenge Cup!
Qualifying for Round 13 took place Saturday morning. The team was eager to perfect the truck setup for the new track modifications. With a 2:00 time limit, Cory set out and tried to set a time that would give him the opportunity to start up front. After 4 laps though, Cory sat in 9th place and would start on the 5th row. The race started off and the battles started within the first lap. Winner was charging hard in his #67 Fabtech/General Tire Prolite, looking to make up some positions. He was mixing it up between Ryan Beat, Cole Mamer, and Mickey Thomas for the whole first half of the race. Winner passed Mickey Thomas just before the mandatory caution. The second half of the race started and Winner kept dicing with Mamer. He was moving the truck around the track to try and make a pass stick, but couldn’t complete the pass. The track started going away in the final laps, with huge ruts and holes developing. Cory went into protection mode and brought home a 7th place finish for Round 13. Definitely not satisfied, the team would make changes and look to Sunday as a new opportunity for a better finishing result.
The Challenge Cup race on Sunday is a no points, winner take all money race. With Saturday behind them, Cory and the WMG team were excited to get the day started. All the excitement came to an end though as Cory would qualify in 13th for the race. Starting on the back row, he knew there was a lot of work to do ahead of him. The green flag dropped and Cory quickly jumped 3 spots, missing a pile-up in turn 1. With the top 5 trucks separating from the field, Cory put his head down and started to charge. With no mandatory caution in the middle of the race, he had to do everything to make up time. At lap 8 is when the field of trucks started running into problems. The condition and heat of the track mixed with the temperatures outside were causing many too get flat tires. His General Tires and Ultra Wheels were hooked up though and would help Cory get around multiple others with 6 laps remaining. The truck setup was dialed for the second half of the race, with Cory now running lap times comparable to the top 3. But time would run out and Winner would end up crossing the finish line in 6th place.
